5ton gantry crane

KUANGSHAN CRANE has completed the production and shipment of a 5 ton portable gantry crane for an excavator manufacturer in Mexico. The crane will handle components and workpieces inside the customer’s production facility.

As this was the customer’s first lifting-equipment purchase, the solution had to address limited indoor space and LCL sea freight. KUANGSHAN CRANE matched the gantry dimensions, hoisting mechanism, and travel system, delivering a low-headroom crane with a 4.5 m span and 4.5 m overall height.

5 Ton Portable Gantry Crane Project Background

The customer is an excavator manufacturer in Mexico. As its indoor material-handling needs increased, it planned to purchase a compact gantry crane for lifting components and transferring workpieces between production stations.

The crane needed a 5 ton capacity, indoor suitability, and the ability to move without fixed floor rails. Because it would be shipped to Mexico as LCL cargo, the gantry dimensions, effective lifting height, and packing requirements also had to be confirmed in advance.

Custom 5 Ton Trackless Solution for Indoor Handling

Based on the customer’s indoor lifting and workstation-transfer needs, KUANGSHAN CRANE developed a 5 ton electrically driven trackless gantry crane. The design coordinated rated capacity, available space, mobility, and export shipping requirements.

During initial discussions, the customer requested an overall height of approximately 6 m for more working space. After considering LCL shipping, the customer changed both the span and overall height to 4.5 m. KUANGSHANCRANE then matched the gantry structure, hoisting mechanism, and technical parameters to the confirmed dimensions.

To suit the revised height, the crane uses a 5 ton low-headroom electric chain hoist and provides an effective lifting height of 3.36 m. Its electrically driven trackless gantry can move through the indoor production area without fixed floor rails.

The crane includes both a wired pendant and wireless remote control. Its electrical system is configured for the local 220 V, 60 Hz, three-phase power supply. After factory testing, the complete crane was packed in one reinforced wooden case for export.

Main specifications:

  • Capacity: 5 tons
  • Span: 4.5 m
  • Overall height: 4.5 m
  • Effective lifting height: 3.36 m
  • Hoisting mechanism: Low-headroom electric chain hoist
  • Lifting speed: 2.7 m/min
  • Hoist trolley travel speed: 11 m/min
  • Duty class: A3
  • Gantry travel: Electrically driven, trackless
  • Controls: Wired pendant and wireless remote control
  • Protection class: IP54
  • Power supply: 220 V, 60 Hz, three-phase

The complete system consists of a main beam, legs, diagonal braces, ground beams, wheel assemblies, electric traveling mechanisms, controls, and a low-headroom electric chain hoist. It can operate on an indoor floor that meets the required load-bearing capacity and levelness.

How Does the Solution Balance Lifting Height, Mobility, and Shipping?

1. Gantry Dimensions Optimized for LCL Shipping

The customer initially requested an overall height of approximately 6 m to gain more lifting space. For export equipment, however, dimensions must account for packing, handling, and shipping as well as operation.

This project used LCL sea freight. Longer beams and legs would increase package length, require more continuous loading space, and make consolidation and handling less flexible. Crane dimensions therefore had to support the complete delivery process, not only the lifting task.

After KUANGSHANCRANE explained these shipping considerations, the customer requested a quotation based on a 4.5 m span and 4.5 m overall height. The revised dimensions reduced component and package length, making consolidation, transfer, and loading easier while lowering the risk of impact or package deformation during repeated handling.

2. Low-Headroom Chain Hoist Adds Approximately 275 mm of Lifting Height

Reducing the overall height from approximately 6 m to 4.5 m improved transportability but also reduced the available lifting space. A conventional 5 ton electric-trolley chain hoist would occupy approximately 1,015 mm of headroom.

To limit this impact, KUANGSHAN CRANE selected a 5 ton low-headroom electric chain hoist requiring approximately 740 mm of top space. With the same gantry and beam conditions, this provides approximately 275 mm more effective lifting height.

The final crane achieves a 3.36 m effective lifting height within a 4.5 m overall height. The low-headroom design preserves more of the customer’s working space while keeping the crane suitable for LCL shipping.

3. Electric Trackless Travel and Dual Controls Improve Indoor Flexibility

The customer wanted the crane to move without fixed workshop rails. KUANGSHANCRANE therefore used a trackless structure, avoiding rail installation and related foundation work. Because the crane is rated for 5 tons, electric traveling mechanisms were selected to avoid the difficulty of manually pushing the large gantry.

The crane also has a wired pendant and wireless remote control. Operators can select the appropriate method according to the load position, travel direction, and available view. The pendant supports close-range operation, while the remote allows the operator to change position, monitor the load, or remain clear of the travel area.

Together, the trackless structure, electric travel, and dual controls provide a practical mobility and operating system. This arrangement is well suited to indoor production areas where lifting points vary and dedicated rails are not practical.

Trackless travel still requires a suitable floor. Before operation, the customer must confirm that the travel area is level, solid, and has sufficient load-bearing capacity, with no height differences, obstacles, or local settlement that could affect crane movement.

From Custom Design to Export Shipment

After the final parameters were confirmed, KUANGSHANCRANE completed the general arrangement drawing and integrated the gantry steelwork, low-headroom chain hoist, electric travel system, and controls into the complete crane design. Manufacturing began after customer approval.

After production, the low-headroom chain hoist was wired and function-tested. The steel structure, control system, nameplate, and supporting components were also checked. Rather than supplying only a gantry frame or separate hoist, KUANGSHANCRANE delivered a complete system with matched structural and electrical components.

For LCL and long-distance sea freight, the main beam, legs, ground beams, braces, chain hoist, and related parts were packed in one reinforced wooden case. Steel angles reinforced the exterior, while the components inside were individually wrapped and secured to reduce movement and impact during handling. The shipment departed Qingdao Port for Manzanillo, Mexico.

KUANGSHAN CRANE: Turning Lifting Needs into a Deliverable Solution

The 5 ton electrically driven trackless gantry crane has completed manufacturing, testing, and packing and has been shipped to Mexico.

The value of this project lies in turning the customer’s initial lifting requirement into confirmed specifications, structural drawings, and an executable production plan. For a first-time crane buyer, this process helps prevent mismatches between crane dimensions, lifting height, travel method, and shipping conditions.

A compact gantry crane may look simple, but correct selection still depends on the load, workshop space, floor conditions, travel method, and transport limits.

If you need a flexible material-handling solution for your workshop, provide KUANGSHANCRANE with the required capacity, span, overall height, lifting height, power supply, and floor conditions. Our engineers will recommend a suitable compact gantry crane solution for your application.
