Overhead Crane Sheave: The Ultimate Guide to Specifications, Types & Discard Criteria

Date: 15 Jul, 2026

The overhead crane sheave is one of the most critical components in a crane’s wire rope reeving system, widely used in overhead cranes, gantry cranes, electric hoists, and other lifting equipment. Its groove profile, diameter, bearing arrangement, material, and manufacturing quality directly influence wire rope service life, lifting efficiency, and overall crane safety.

This guide explains the technical requirements for overhead crane sheaves based on GB/T 27546-2011, including sheave types, bearing options, rope groove dimensions, material grades, geometric tolerances, operating requirements, and discard criteria. Whether you are selecting a new crane sheave, inspecting an existing one, or comparing design specifications, this article provides a practical engineering reference.

1. Scope

GB/T 27546-2011 applies to steel (or cast iron) sheaves for wire ropes commonly used on cranes.

2. Sheave Types and Bearing Categories

A typical sheave assembly consists of a rim, web/spoke, hub, bearing, dust cover, spacer ring, and snap ring.

2.1 By Manufacturing Process

Overhead crane sheaves are manufactured in four types: cast, welded, double-plate pressed, and rolled.

2.2 By Bearing Type

3. Rope Groove Dimensions and D/d Ratio

The rope groove cross-section dimensions must comply with Table 1 of the standard.

The relationship between sheave diameter D and wire rope diameter d (the D/d ratio) is given in Table 2. This is also cross-referenced in GB/T 34529-2017 for overall drum and sheave selection.

4.2 Surface Finish and Fits

FeatureRequirement
Rope groove surface (machined)Ra ≤ 12.5 μm
Rope groove surface (rolled/pressed)Ra ≤ 25 μm
Bearing bore surfaceRa ≤ 3.2 μm
Other non-machined surfacesRa ≤ 25 μm
Sheave body to bearing OD fitRecommended M7 or P7

4.3 Geometric Tolerances

Sheave geometric tolerances (Source: GB/T 27546-2011)

t1 and t2 are form tolerances; t3 and t4 are position tolerances.

4.4 Operating Conditions

  • Ambient temperature: −20°C to +40°C. Conditions outside this range require agreement between user and manufacturer.
  • Fleet angle for rope entering/exiting the sheave groove: ≤ 5°

4.5 Sheave Discard Criteria

An overhead crane sheave shall be discarded when any one of the following conditions is found:

#Discard Condition
1Cracks or loose riveted connections
2Rim damage; uneven groove wear reaching 3 mm
3Welded, cast, or rolled sheave: wear exceeds 20% of rim plate thickness, OR groove bottom diameter reduction reaches 50% of wire rope diameter
4Double-plate pressed sheave: rope liner wear exceeds 50% of original thickness
5Any other defect affecting service or causing wire rope damage

Note: GB/T 27546-2026 (effective September 2026) removes the discard criteria clause. The above discard thresholds from the 2011 edition remain valuable reference for practical inspection.

5. Marking, Packaging, Transport and Storage

  • Each sheave shall carry a permanent, legible marking at a prominent location showing the sheave model designation and manufacturer’s identification
  • Packaging shall protect sheaves from damage and corrosion (GB/T 13384-2008)
  • Appropriate protective measures shall be taken during transport
  • During storage, sheaves shall not contact acidic or alkaline corrosive substances; protect from water ingress and prolonged direct sunlight

6. Key Takeaways for Safe and Reliable Lifting

Selecting the correct overhead crane sheave is only part of ensuring safe and reliable crane operation. Proper groove dimensions, suitable materials, accurate manufacturing tolerances, and regular inspection all contribute to extending wire rope life and reducing maintenance costs.

By following the technical requirements of GB/T 27546-2011 and applying the recommended discard criteria during routine inspections, crane owners and maintenance engineers can improve equipment reliability and minimize the risk of unexpected failures.

If you are designing, replacing, or maintaining overhead crane sheaves, these specifications provide a practical reference for achieving both safety and long-term performance.
