Customer Background: Metal Fabrication Workshop Expanding with an Additional Single Girder Overhead Crane

In 2025, a Croatian customer reached us through our website expressing the need to purchase a single girder overhead crane. The customer, based in Croatia, is a production enterprise engaged in metal plate processing and structural component manufacturing. Their process flow includes steel plate shot blasting, CNC cutting, heavy bending, and component assembly—a typical metal fabrication workshop environment. Their workshop already features high-end brand double girder overhead cranes and Abus equipment, giving them solid experience in crane technical requirements, quality assessment, and compliance standards. This purchase is a capacity expansion following business growth.

Key Challenges Faced by the Croatian Customer When Purchasing a Single Girder Overhead Crane

The customer’s procurement goal was clear: add two new cranes to the existing workshop—one 5-ton and one 10-ton, both FEM standard single girder overhead cranes. Control mode: pendant plus wireless remote. Power supply: 380V/50Hz/3PH. To be installed on existing rails without changing the workshop layout, while adapting to the workshop’s operational frequency. Key challenges included:

First, the net clearance above the rail was only 1100mm. Without altering the workshop layout or affecting existing overhead pipeline routes, the available net space above the existing rail was limited, requiring careful height management. The standard FEM standard solution for the 5-ton model had a total height of 1172mm, exceeding the available clearance by 72mm. While small, there was no room for compromise—exceeding the limit meant impossible installation.

Second, the crane traveling speed needed to support three-shift high-frequency operation. The customer’s workshop operates three continuous shifts. The crane must move frequently between the automatic shot blasting line, plasma cutting machine, heavy bending machine, and sub-component assembly areas, with clear turnaround time expectations for each cycle.

Third, the customer had a limited budget for this project but maintained high acceptance standards for product quality. Their existing 10-ton overhead crane and Abus equipment had been running for years in good condition. New equipment would operate alongside these European first-tier brands in the same space, requiring the same quality level but with a price advantage.

KUANGSHAN CRANE Solution: Custom Measures for Height and Speed Challenges

Main Beam Structure Adjustment: Solving the Height Limitation Within 72mm

In the standard FEM standard single girder overhead crane solution, the main beam is placed entirely above the end carriage. The 5-ton model height is 1172mm. The customer’s workshop limit was 1100mm—a 72mm deviation requiring structural adjustments.

Our solution changed the main beam layout from “fully above the end carriage” to “partially embedded into the end carriage.” After modification, the total crane height was compressed to meet the clearance requirement while maintaining the A5 duty class and original load-bearing capacity unchanged. The entire design was 1:1 dimension-matched based on the workshop drawings and site photos provided by the customer. Key parameters including span, rail top elevation, existing rail specifications (50×50mm for the 5-ton single girder overhead crane, 60×60mm for the 10-ton single girder overhead crane), and obstacle positions were verified through multiple rounds to ensure installation required no additional structural modifications by the customer.

Increasing Crane Traveling Speed to Match Production Rhythm

During on-site commissioning, the customer reported that the high-frequency workshop operated at an extremely fast production pace, placing demanding requirements on material flow efficiency. The crane’s standard traveling speed range was 3–30 m/min. Factory default parameters were set at a conservative mid-range based on general safety standards.

In response to the customer’s pursuit of maximum productivity, our service team responded immediately. Fully complying with original safety specifications, the engineer adjusted the traveling speed on-site, directly maximizing it to the rated top speed of 30 m/min. This adjustment improved the workshop’s overall material throughput efficiency by over 20%. While ensuring high-precision positioning and smooth crane operation, it completely eliminated the logistics bottleneck, perfectly matching and supporting the customer’s multi-shift, high-density continuous production.

Installation On-Site

After the two cranes were delivered at Port Rijeka, we deployed one engineer to Croatia for installation and commissioning. The planned schedule was 20 days; actual installation took approximately 16 days before handover for production. During installation, systematic training was provided to the customer’s operators and maintenance personnel, covering safety operation procedures, daily inspection points, and common fault troubleshooting—ensuring the customer’s team could operate independently after handover. Both cranes now run stably alongside the existing Demag and Abus overhead cranes in the customer’s workshop.

Project Results and Future Cooperation

Currently, both single girder overhead cranes are operating stably in the customer’s workshop, working in coordination with Demag and Abus equipment. The customer plans to purchase 5 single girder overhead cranes for a new factory in 2026—a larger single batch than this order. Our cooperation is ongoing.

Taking the Croatia project as an example: local law required submission of bilingual Declarations of Conformity in English and Croatian. Many suppliers lacking deep European experience get stuck on such documentation, causing equipment to be held at port or incurring high demurrage fees. Leveraging our past project experience, we completed the full set of bilingual legal documents before shipment. The customer encountered zero documentation issues during acceptance. What we deliver is not just “certification,” but a delivery chain without friction—from equipment to paperwork.

Third, price competitiveness when compared with European brands. European first-tier brands offer the same configuration at significantly higher prices than Chinese manufacturers. After receiving our quotation and comparing with local brand quotes, the customer quickly recognized the value of our combination: equivalent configuration, CE compliance, and an engineer on-site delivery.
